Notes: The Bubble Music Club

Overview:

The Bubble Music Club is a place for music enthusiasts to gather, perform, discuss, and explore music together in an informal setting. Whether you’re a performer or simply someone who enjoys listening, this club offers a relaxed environment where everyone can engage with music in their own way.

Club Structure:

  1. Performance and Discussion:
    • Music Performances: Members can perform on instruments like the piano, acoustic guitar, and ukulele.
    • Q&A with Performers: After performances, members can ask questions and engage in discussions with the performer about their music, creative process, and inspiration.
    • Music as a Language Tool: Discussions may revolve around how members first learned English through music and its role in language learning.
  2. Music Exploration Sessions:
    • Song Analysis: We’ll break down songs into their core components, such as lyrical content, melody, mood, and instruments used.
    • Focus on One Song: Occasionally, we’ll have sessions dedicated to dissecting one song—starting with the lyrics, moving on to the mood, and exploring the historical or cultural context.
    • Deeper Meanings: We’ll look at songs with deeper, less obvious meanings (e.g., “Every Breath You Take,” “Your Beautiful,” “Strange Fruit,” “Pumped Up Kicks”) and discuss how the lyrics contrast with the music or present hidden messages.
  3. Listening Sessions:
    • Variety of Music: We’ll listen to music together—both live and pre-recorded, including YouTube videos, covers, and different versions of the same song.
    • Different Eras & Instruments: Discussions will include the use of different instruments and how the era or genre influences the music.
    • Adjective Exploration: As we listen, members can identify adjectives or feelings they experience with the music and share them with the group.
  4. Games & Activities:
    • Song Association Games: Fun activities like song association will help members engage more deeply with music and lyrics.

Discussion Topics:

  • Concept Albums: We’ll explore albums that tell a story or revolve around a central theme, diving into their narratives and messages.
  • Music History: As we discuss songs, we can look at the history of the artist, the song’s development, and its impact over time.

Musician Insights:

  • Guest Musicians: Occasionally, we’ll have musicians share their first experiences with music and discuss how it shaped their relationship with English or language in general.

Approach:

The club will be informal, free from the structure of a typical music lesson. There will be a loose plan for each meeting, but the focus is on enjoyment, shared experiences, and personal expression through music.

Personal Connection with Music:

Students can talk about music in a way that is personal yet not necessarily about themselves. They can discuss what they’ve seen, observed, or experienced with music, making it a reflection of their general thoughts on music rather than strictly personal stories.
